ABOUT G.E.M.S.

G.E.M.S. is an initiative for middle school girls of Prince George's county designed to enhance math and science skills and increase interest in STEM career fields. The G.E.M.S. experience includes:

  • Weekly, after-school enrichment sessions facilitated by undergraduates that
    • encourage leadership
    • enhance science and mathematics learning
    • feature hands-on math and science activities
    • highlight the contributions of women scientists and engineers
  • Field trips to math and science educational and research centers, for example, Koshland Science Museum, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, National Museum of Natural History, Baltimore Aquarium and the University of Maryland 
  • Saturday Academy workshops that allow girls of Prince George's county to participate in interactive STEM-related activities

Become A G.E.M.S. STUDENT MENTOR !

G.E.M.S. Student Mentors are invaluable to the development of the next generation of scientists and engineers!  


G.E.M.S. mentors are expected to

  • facilitate weekly after-school enrichment sessions at middle schools. Note, middle schools are in close proximity to the University of Maryland, College park
  • devote 3-4 hours a week to G.E.M.S, which will include transportation to and from the middle school for the after-school enrichment program, participating in the after-school enrichment sessions, mentor meetings, and preparation for after-school enrichment activities
  • chaperone field trips. Note, G.E.M.S. offers 1-2 field trips per academic year. 


Note, participating in G.E.M.S. may satisfy academic requirement for community service.  


ALL G.E.M.S. mentors must complete a background check before participating in the after-school enrichment programs in the middle schools of Prince George's County.

BECOME A G.E.M.S. STUDENT INTERN

G.E.M.S. is seeking outgoing students to join our team for a dynamic internship opportunity.

A G.E.M.S. Student Intern assists the G.E.M.S. organization in preparation and coordination of G.E.M.S. activities and initiatives.

Student interns 

  • assist in planning and organizing events 
  • establishing and maintaining a social media presence
  • assist in communications around G.E.M.S. events
  • building relationships and partnerships with the local community and other organizations
  • interacting with the director and executive board of G.E.M.S.

As a G.E.M.S. Volunteer you can

  • work with girls on hands-on activities during our Saturday Academy workshops
  • facilitate and offer STEM-related activities to G.E.M.S. students
  • help the G.E.M.S. organization plan, coordinate, and offer opportunities to girls of Prince George's County

BECOME A G.E.M.S. SITE COORDINATOR

The G.E.M.S. Site Coordinator is invaluable to the G.E.M.S. organization!  G.E.M.S. Site Coordinators devote five to six hours weekly by 

  • coordinating G.E.M.S. student mentors and activities for the after-school enrichment program at Prince George's middle schools
  • facilitating G.E.M.S. weekly training meetings for the G.E.M.S. after-school enrichment program
  • coordinating transportation to and from G.E.M.S. after-school enrichment program
  • leading the after-school enrichment program
  • communicating and interacting directly with the G.E.M.S. Mentor Coordinator

G.E.M.S. Site Coordinators will receive a stipend of $500 per semester.
